Chennai Local Train New Travel Restrictions From 06-05-2021
Southern Railway imposes new travel restrictions in Chennai Suburban effective from 6th May 2021
Government of Tamil Nadu, as part of its efforts to control the spread of COVID-19, has imposed new restrictions with effect from 04:00 A.M of 06-05-2021 to 04:00 A.M on 20-5-2021 (14 days). As per the new restrictions, public transport (railways, metro, Buses, cabs) are allowed to operate at a maximum of 50% of the seating capacity and also that all Government offices and Private offices shall function with a maximum staff strength of 50%. Taking cognizance of this, Southern Railway will impose the following restrictions in the operation of its Suburban services in the Chennai region so as to restrict the passengers in the coach to 50% of the seating capacity:
Permitted Category:
Tickets will be issued / travel permitted only to Railway staff, essential services staff authorized by State Government such as health, law and order, sanitation workers, municipal corporation workers, gfc
Staff of all Central and State Government departments and PSUs, Staff of Madras High Court judicial bodies and quasi-judicial bodies including lawyers, travel and logistics organization staff including Chennai Port Trust, Kamarajar Port Trust, staff of e-commerce companies on duty, staff of print and electronic media, staff of nationalized, private and co-operative banks, and staff of private security agencies
Passengers falling under these categories are requested to carry the photo identity card issued by their organization.
Categories not eligible for travel:
General public other than the above, including students and staff of educational institutions (which are closed during the above period) will not be permitted to travel during the entire above mentioned period
General permission given for women passengers to travel throughout the day also stands cancelled except for those coming under the above categories.
The objective of limiting the permitted category of passengers only to specified categories is not to refuse traveling rights of any specified category of passengers but it is to solely limit the passengers in a train service to 50% of the seating capacity as required by the State government for containing the spread of COVID disease.
